Any of the third molars, such as the third maxillary and mandibular molars, could be correctly referred to as wisdom teeth. People ages twenty and up commonly have about two pairs of wisdom teeth; more than that and they become supernumerary, which can cause problems by impinging on the space of other teeth as they grow, and becoming more of a nuisance each day as it hits the tongue and the walls of the mouth. It can also cause toothache because it is developing the wrong way.

The fancy term for this condition is hypodontia, but you get the idea. If this condition is not treated, it could lead to certain gum disease, like a rapture or a puss along the area where the extra wisdom teeth are. It is not a very pleasant ordeal. In fact, you may even go so far as to say that it is as mind-numbingly irksome. The best way to deal with hypodontia is by visiting the dentist and having them extract the offending teeth.

Granted that the idea of pulling teeth is as unpleasant as, well, pulling teeth (which is why the phrase was coined in the first place), it is better than carrying on with a potential disaster in your mouth. Not many people value dentists as they should, but regular visits can actually save you from further pain. They help prevent and treat mouth problems which tend to branch into medical problems. If you are suffering from hypodontia, it would be best if you see your dentist now.
